The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on Friday ordered an urgent legal evaluation of the Palestinian Football Association’s proposal to suspend Israel due to the ongoing war in Gaza, and promised to discuss the matter at an extraordinary meeting of the FIFA Council next July.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino took the decision during the Federation’s General Assembly (Congress) meeting in Bangkok, during which the President of the Palestinian Federation made an emotional appeal to the participating delegations to hold a vote on
Preventing Israeli clubs and teams from participating in tournaments, accusing them of numerous violations of FIFA laws.

The Palestinian proposal accused the Israeli Federation of complicity in violations of international law by the Israeli government, discrimination against Arab players, and including clubs located in the Palestinian territories in the Israeli league competition. The Israeli Federation rejected these accusations.

The request to impose sanctions on the Israeli Federation comes two years after FIFA decided to ban Russia from participating in international tournaments following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

193 Palestinian players were killed in Gaza

Gabriel Rajoub, president of the Palestinian Federation, said, “FIFA cannot remain indifferent to these violations or genocide taking place in Palestine, just as it did not remain indifferent to many previous events.”

He added, “To what extent must the Palestinian football family’s suffering continue for FIFA to move with the same speed and decisiveness as it did on other issues?” Does FIFA consider that some wars are more important than others and some victims are more important than others?

After the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation carried out by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) against Israeli settlements close to the Gaza Strip on October 7, Israel launched a military campaign in which it used all heavy weapons on land, air and sea on the Gaza Strip, which led to the death of more than 35 people. One thousand Palestinian civilians, most of whom are women, children and the elderly.

Rajoub said that 193 Palestinian players were martyred, in addition to the destruction of football infrastructure, league competitions were halted, and the national team was forced to play its matches in the World Cup qualifiers abroad.
