Southampton secured a return to the English Premier League after beating Leeds United 1-0 in the promotion play-off final on Sunday after one season spent in the second division.

Southampton’s Adam Armstrong scored a goal in the first half to lead his team to the top at the expense of Leeds, who struggled to come back in the result, but the crossbar prevented substitute Daniel James from scoring in the second half.

Southampton will join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the English Premier League next season.

Ipswich Town is competing in the top flight after an absence of 22 years, while Leicester returned to the Premier League after one season spent in the second division.
